PHP Caregiver Spotlight: Lipsia Ortiz

08 October 2025

For Hispanic & Latine Heritage Month, we’re proud to shine a light on Lipsia Ortiz, Associate Customer Care Coordinator for Public Programs at Providence Health Plan (PHP). Lipsia’s story reflects the strength of family, faith, and service that guide her both in life and in her work supporting our members.

Rooted in heritage and community Lipsia

Lipsia proudly identifies as Mexican and takes deep pride in her heritage. “The Hispanic culture is very family-oriented and warm – we help each other out and make sure no one is left behind,” she shared. Growing up, her family lived by the belief that if two people could eat, there was always room at the table for one more. That spirit of hospitality and belonging is something she carries with her into her role at PHP.

She also finds special meaning in Providence’s Catholic foundation. “Most of my family in Mexico are Catholic, so working for a Catholic organization felt like a natural fit,” Lipsia said. “It’s part of what made me feel at home here.”

Serving with compassion

In her role in customer care, Lipsia connects with members every day to help them understand and access their health benefits. For her, this is more than a job, it’s a calling. “Helping others, especially those who are vulnerable, is something big for me,” she explained. “I get to support people in both English and Spanish, and that makes such a difference for members who might feel too shy or nervous to ask for help in a language that isn’t their own.”

LipsiaLipsia’s personal experience as a child of immigrants has shaped her perspective. Growing up, she often translated for her parents, who were hesitant to ask questions in English. That memory drives her to ensure members feel comfortable, respected, and heard. “I make sure no question is a ‘dumb’ question,” she said. “I want members to feel at ease and confident using the benefits available to them.”

A voice for equity

Lipsia

When asked what she wishes people understood about the Hispanic and Latine community, Lipsia reflected: “So many people in our community are working hard every day, just trying to provide a better life for their families. Even with little, they still give generously and welcome others with a smile. I wish more people could see that strength and goodness.”

She also sees PHP making a meaningful difference through initiatives like the Spanish-language customer service line. “It may seem like a small thing, but for members who don’t speak English, it’s huge,” she said. “It means they can call, be understood, and feel cared for.”

Advice for future caregivers

For those in the Hispanic and Latine community considering a career in healthcare, Lipsia offers encouragement, saying, “Join us. Help us expand the care we provide to our community. Providence is growing, and having more caregivers who can support members in Spanish will make an incredible difference.”

Living the mission

Lipsia

A “day in the life” for Lipsia may involve answering calls, explaining benefits, or guiding members to helpful resources – but at its heart, her work is about compassion and connection. “Every day I get the chance to step into someone else’s shoes, understand their struggles, and ease their way,” she said. “That’s a blessing.”

We are grateful for Lipsia’s warmth, dedication, and advocacy for our members and community. Her story reminds us that healthcare is not just about coverage, it’s about belonging, dignity, and care for all.
