At Providence Health Plan (PHP), Chief Marketing and Product Officer Caresse Sakagawa is passionate about making healthcare easier, more human, and accessible for everyone.
Leading with purpose and empathy
As part of PHP's leadership team, Caresse guides marketing, product development, and the overall experience members have with the PHP brand. Her approach blends purpose with empathy, aligning PHP's products and services with the organization's values and her personal commitment to health equity and compassionate care.
With over two decades of experience in marketing and product leadership, Caresse's professional journey began with a degree in Economics, followed by her MBA, with a specialization in statistics, from New York University. At NYU, she taught marketing courses and conducted research to better understand diverse customer needs and behaviors. These experiences helped shape her early perspective on consumer-focused innovation.
A holistic approach to healthcare
For Caresse, healthcare extends far beyond doctor visits. She actively supports initiatives at PHP to introduce holistic services such as meal delivery and personalized support for members transitioning home after hospital stays. These efforts reflect her belief that healthcare addresses the whole person, not only traditionally defined medical conditions.
One of Caresse's proudest accomplishments is championing the "Health For All" initiative, recognizing that healthcare includes safe housing, nutritious food, and mental health support. The Health For All initiative has built meaningful connections with local community health organizations, like North by Northeast Community Health Center, Central City Concern, and The Oregon Food Bank. In 2023, the effort donated over $300,000 and 1,000 volunteer hours to amplify the critical community work of these organizations.
Commitment to community and mentorship
Caresse's dedication extends beyond her professional responsibilities. As a board member for Central City Concern, she contributes to programs aimed at ending homelessness through a comprehensive and people-centered approach.
She also mentors young women who have experienced incarceration, partnering with the Oregon Department of Corrections and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Her belief in second chances motivates her to offer hope and guidance, empowering these young women toward brighter futures.
Her community impact earned her recognition as a 2025 Women of Influence honoree by the Portland Business Journal, highlighting her contributions in business, nonprofit initiatives, and public service.
Vision for the Future
As healthcare continues to evolve, Caresse remains focused on breaking down barriers and designing services that genuinely improve lives. Her vision, community advocacy, and dedication to compassionate healthcare reflect the heart of PHP's mission, creating lasting positive change for individuals and communities alike.
