Take the First Step Toward a Smoke-Free Life

20 November 2025

The Great American Smokeout, held every year on the third Thursday in November, is more than a date on the calendar, it’s an opportunity to start your smoke-free journey. Join thousands of others taking a step toward a healthier life.

As a Providence Health Plan member, you have access to resources at no cost to you. Quitting can feel overwhelming, but we make it less scary with as much support as you need to break from the pack. You’ve heard the statistics. You know the reasons. Now, let’s talk about the benefits and how to get started.

Why Quit? The Benefits Start Immediately

Choosing to quit smoking is one of the best decisions you can make for your health and well-being. Within minutes of your last cigarette, your body begins to recover. Over time, the benefits multiply:

  • Reduces cancer risk and strengthens your heart and lungs

  • Improves reproductive health, quality of life, and life expectancy

  • Relieves stress and anxiety and decreases cognitive decline

  • Improves mood, concentration, and symptoms of depression

  • Saves you money – use https://smokefree.gov/tools-tips/quitstart to see how much you’ll save

How to Quit: Tips for Success

Quitting takes practice, patience, and support. Here are steps to help you succeed:

1. Set a quit date and mark your calendar

2. Write down your reasons for quitting

3. Create a plan to manage triggers

4. Establish a support system of family, friends, a counselor, or a quit-smoking group

5. Find new ways to manage cravings – use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), reach out to a friend, or exercise

6. Reward yourself for milestones with a special meal, a warm bath, a new book, hobby supplies, or something special to you

Talk With Your Provider

Your provider can help you choose the right programs and resources. Combining medication and counseling is more effective than using either method alone. Consider nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and connect with a quit coach to increase your chances of success. Quitting abruptly is harder. Having a plan makes all the difference.
